How Eating Fish Helps with Weight Loss

When it comes to fish, most people tend to either love it or hate it. If you already love it then we don't have to convince you to eat more of it, but if you hate it then maybe these facts will help change your mind.

Fish is a superfood

Fish is the ultimate superfood, because it not only contains plenty of vitamins and Omega-3, which are good for your eyes, skin and heart, it also helps to prevent arthritis, ease menstrual cramps, lower cholesterol, promote brain function and alleviate depression.

Fish is a filling meal

In addition to all of these health benefits, fish is also extremely good for weight loss. To begin with, a fish-based meal is both light but filling, allowing you to feel full without eating too much.

Fish is healthier than red meat

Fish is full of proteins and it has fewer calories and saturated fats than red meat. If you make fish an integral part of your diet plan to lose weight, you will automatically be eating more seafood and less red meat. This will not only help you to shed those pounds faster, it will also improve your cholesterol levels and your heart function.

Types of fish

There are two types of fish, lean fish and fatty fish, and both are good for weight loss. Fatty fish tend to be less popular with people since they have a stronger fishy flavour, however they are not more unhealthy for you than lean fish. Though they contain higher fats, these are the healthy Omega-3 fats that are good for you. Lean fish include grouper, flounder, tilapia, cod, halibut, haddock and red snapper which fatty fish include salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel and sardines.

Fish can be cooked in healthy ways

Of course, you cannot eat fried fish and expect to lose weight. Instead, depending on what type of fish you are eating and the ingredients you have on hand, you can choose to either steam, grill, broil or roast it. Sushi is another healthy mode of preparation for fish.

Fish is a versatile food

Fish can easily be prepared in a multitude of ways, depending on one’s tastes and preferences. You can go with the spice-laden gravy preparation of fish curry or a lightly steamed continental preparation accompanied by vegetables. Since there are so many options, you can easily make three different fish dishes a week so that you don’t get bored eating the same thing time and again.

Fish lifts your mood

One drawback of dieting is that it can make you feel unhappy and depressed, since you are restraining yourself from eating all the things that you normally would. Fish is known to have qualities that alleviate depression and lighten your mood, so it will help you get through your diet easily.

Fish oil as a substitute

For people who do not like fish, fish oil is a good substitute for the nutrients and can help you lose weight. It has been included in many diets as a weight loss tool, but it is not half as effective as eating actual fish. Fish oil is also a good option for vegetarians who do not mind consuming the fish oil tablets.
