Today, Dr. Sudha Marwah - Gynecologist & Obstetrician at Spectrum Healthcare, Mumbai, helps us understand whether expensive vaginal grooming treatments are actually worth the price. Read this before making any decisions...
Is vajazzling safe?Vajazzling is when the vagina is decorated with glitters and jewels for good appearance. The stones are glued to the vulva. This method can only be done after getting a full Brazilian wax. Dr. Sudha says, "Applying adhesive to your freshly waxed vagina, can cause a little trouble to many women, who have sensitive skin. The irritation caused by the adhesive can subside or it can get itchy. Besides, it may trouble your partner as well."
Is shaving the vagina safe? This is one of the most common methods to take care of pubic hair. Shaving is a quick technique but it can also lead to prickly hair growth which can become itchy and uncomfortable. Besides, it can also create tiny tears, which can be an entry for infection and bacteria. If you get nicks or cuts, then it can get infected.
Is pubic hair dyeing safe?
Dr. Sudha says, "The skin of your vagina is ten times thinner than your scalp, and dyeing this hair will interfere with its health. Dyeing your pubic hair can affect the heath of the vagina by causing extra white discharge or irritation or redness."
Is bleaching pubic hair safe?Due to constant waxing and shaving, your vagina can turn dark. To get rid of this dark skin on or around vaginal area, most women prefer bleaching. The chemicals used in the bleaching products can cause severe skin irritation, blisters and even burns. Hence, make sure you get in touch with an expert.
Is it safe to use products to cleanse the vagina? The constant use of chemicals and products can sometimes irritate or upset the normal pH balance of your vaginal skin, and can cause irritation and infections. In order to avoid foul smell, Dr. Sudha says, "Bathe regularly, change out of sweaty clothes more frequently and avoid wearing tight clothes."
Is it safe to pierce the vagina?Mostly the piercing is done in the clitoral hood of the vagina, but at times the inner and outer labia or perineum can also be pierced. Piercing in any part of the body increases the chances of infection. Besides, vaginal piercing can increase your risk to bacterial infection, bleeding, nerve damage, allergies and severe scarring.
Is Brazilian waxing safe?Brazilian waxing is done by using warm wax. Warm wax is applied to hair and covered with small strips of cloth. When the wax hardens, the cloth is pulled off quickly to remove hair from the roots. Waxing can weaken the skin of your vaginal tissues, which can result in a rash and other infections. Besides, if hygiene is not maintained then serious complications may arise.
